In EIU’s latest global outlook video, Agathe Demarais, Kate Parker and Matthew Oxenford share EIU’s views on the new German government and the 2022 French presidential election.

In Germany the appointment of Olaf Scholz has put an end to 16 years of Angela Merkel’s conservative rule. As chancellor, Mr Scholz will lead a three-party coalition comprising the Social Democratic Party, The Greens and the liberal Free Democratic Party. Senior analyst Matthew Oxenford outlines the incoming leadership’s priorities, how the new government will approach foreign policy towards Russia and China, and what this means for the EU.

From one European powerhouse to another, France’s presidential election will be taking place in April 2022. Current president Emmanuel Macron is the current favourite, owing to a highly fragmented political landscape. Senior analyst Kate Parker shares her thoughts on the chances of the various candidates and discusses which political and economic issues will dominate the election campaign.
