Global Outlook: US fiscal stimulus and migrant remittances

In The Economist Intelligence Unit’s (The EIU) latest global outlook video, Agathe Demarais, Andrew Viteritti and Cailin Birch discuss US fiscal stimulus plans and the impact of the pandemic on global migrant remittances.

In April 2021 the Biden administration announced an unprecedented US$4trn fiscal stimulus package. If approved, this massive injection of cash will have consequences for both the US and the global economy. The EIU’s lead US analyst, Cailin Birch, examines how much of this spending is actually likely to pass Congress this year and what this means for inflation and debt levels.

Migrant remittances are an important source of income for developing economies, but they have been badly affected by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Andrew Viteritti, The EIU’s lead for Commerce & Regulation, shares his insights on exactly how badly the outbreak affected remittance flows last year and whether we are likely to see a recovery in 2021.
